I was an advisor on the development of their new communication portal and the KW1C community of practice.
Research Community of Practice

Hogeschool van Amsterdam

What
The Hogeschool van Amsterdam is in charge of the Amsterdam E-boekenstad consortium of educational institutes, publishers, and manufacturers investigating how e-readers can be used for e-learning and how to improve the e-books value chain.
I have evaluated the collaboration support system used by the consortium and am advising on how to grow their research community of practice.

The Province of Noord-Brabant is involved in the EU PEOPLE project which aims to explore the opportunities for new forms of employment and for improving well-being and cohesion in the frame of the demographic and societal changes. To this purpose, they hosted a large policy makers conference in March 2010.
I advised on conference speakers and the use of social media in and around the conference. I also helped set up a wiki containing a Digital Library of publications and a tutorial to introduce novices to the most relevant social media in the context of the project.

The JurInfo online course was developed by TILT and used by various Dutch institutes of higher education. It teaches law students how to select information resources, develop a search strategy, and judge the search results for relevance and reliability. I analyzed the collaborative workflows in which the online course is planned, edited, and published. I also advised on the (wiki, course authoring) tools to support the authoring process.

This project created a blended learning environment for students working in law firms across the Netherlands while still taking courses at the Tilburg University Department of Social Law. I advised the project leader and helped design and test the supporting tool system consisting of an MCU videoconferencing server and a SURFGroups collaborative workspace

This project created a student portal through which Tilburg University students have personalized access to their most relevant applications and information resources. As the project leader, I was responsible for its specifation and implementation. Besides the technical implementation of the portal in Blackboard, we created a portal community of stakeholders (students, information suppliers, technical developers) and an organizational process for requirements elicitation and portal development and maintenance.

The Leonardo Da Vinci CODRIVE (Competency Ontology driven Vocational Education) project aimed to contribute to a European standard for vocational competencies. To this purpose, a collaborative methodology and supporting tool infrastructure was developed that allows organizations to specify and reach agreement on their common inter-organizational ontologies. I led the development of the community-layer around the existing DOGMA ontology engineering methodology in the context of this project.
CoMa (Copyright Management)

The goal of the CoMa project was to provide information about scientific publishers' policies on institutional repositories (IRs), and to simplify the administration involved. It resulted in a knowledge bank with copyright regulations pertaining to IRs, linked to metadata on journals and articles from journals. I was a researcher in this project and co-author of the Coma in Context report.
METIS (Smart Organizations)

PORT (Peirce Online Research Testbed)

The goal of the NEFTI-2 (Networked Enterprises of the Future and Enabling Telematics Infrastructure) project was to improve the performance of electronic business networks by identifying business models of networked organisations, assessing the impact of telematics on organisations, and developing effective implementation strategies of telematics in organisations.
The purpose of the PORT collaboratory project was to digitize, transcribe, annotate, and analyze the collected manuscripts of Charles S. Peirce located at Harvard University's Houghton Library. PORT's main foci were to develop a model collaboratory for distributed scholarly Peirce manuscript analysis, and to meta-model the testbed development process. Although the project ideas were not fully implemented, many of the ideas have been used by consortium partners in spin-off projects.

MEMO (Mediating & Monitoring Electronic Commerce)

The goal of the MEMO project was to prototype, demonstrate and evaluate a lightweight Electronic Commerce environment (Electronic Commerce-broker) for the facilitation of smaller-scale and more diverse Electronic Commerce applications.

GRASS (Group Report Authoring Support System)

The goal of the GRASS project was to develop a system allowing stakeholders with at least partially opposed interests to produce focused reports assessing the degree of consensus on contentious issues, such as environmental and social dilemmas. GRASS functionality is grounded in Habermas's theory of communicative action, but offers concrete collaborative authoring workflow support.
I was the principal investigator in this project and (co)author of a large number of publications. GRASS can still be accessed here. I am currently preparing a GRASS 2.0 project.
GRNSD (Global Research Network on Sustainable Development)

This project aimed to find innovative ways to apply then (1993-1994) new Internet technologies to facilitate worldwide research collaboration on sustainable development. The GRASS project is a direct descendant of this project.
I was the general coordinator of this project.
